SPECTACULAR DAY FOR THE SERBIAN PHYSIOLOGY IN KRAGUJEVAC

On Friday, 28th February 2014, Kragujevac was, at least for a moment, the absolute center of physiological science in Serbia.

First, in the morning, one of the greatest and most-cited scientists in the world from the field of cardiovascular researches, Prof. dr Naranjan Dhalla, a full professor of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Science of the University of Kragujevac. The degree was awarded to Prof. dr Naranjan Dhalla by the Rector of the University of Kragujevac, Prof. dr Slobodan Arsenijevic. Before Prof. dr Naranjan Dhalla's speech, the introductory speech about this professor was made by Prof. dr Vladimir Jakovljevic, on behalf of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, who emphasized the significance of awarding such a great man and scientist with the Honorary Doctorate of the University of Kragujevac.

     
     

After that ceremony, joint international scientific symposium of the Serbian Physiological Society and the Faculty of Medical Sciences was held in the solemn hall of the Rectorate, and the lecturers were Prof. dr Vladimir Strbak and Prof.dr Olga Pehanova, our guests from the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, as well as eminent scientists from Serbia: Prof. dr Mihajlo Spasic, Prof. dr Dragan Djuric and Ass. Dr Dragan Hrncic. At the end of this symposium, the President of the Serbian Physiological Society, Prof. dr Vladimir Jakovljevic together with the President of the Nomination Board of this society, Prof. dr Dragan Djuric presented two awards:

To Ass. dr Dragan Hrncic for the exceptional doctorate from the field of physiological sciences in 2013, and special award: Gold medal of the SPS to Prof. dr Nebojsa Arsenijevic for his immense contribution in renewal of work of the SPS in the previous period.

     

This great scientific day ended in the afternoon when for the first time, one doctoral dissertation was defended in English, in front of the respected international board, at our Faculty and University. Assistant at the Department of Physiology, dr Vladimir Zivkovic brilliantly presented the results of his researches in front of the board that consisted of:

  1. Prof. dr Naranjan Dhalla
  2. Prof. dr Mihajlo Spasic
  3. Prof. dr Dragan Djuric
  4. Prof. dr Olga Pechanova
  5. Prof. dr Gvozden Rosic

New standards were set in this way for the whole scientific community, at least in the field of physiological and medical sciences, that should be inspiration to all people for similar future realizations.

Great international scientific weekend was completed by the lectures of our dear guests from Slovakia, Prof. dr Vladimir Strbak and Prof. dr Olga Pehanova, that were held for our students at post-graduate studies, on Saturday, 1st March, within their regular activities as visiting professors of our Faculty.

Dr Naranjana Dhalla
Official ceremony of awarding the Honorary Doctorate of the University of Kragujevac to Naranjana Dhalla, Distinguished Professor & Senior Fellow, Centre for the Advancement of Medicine, Director of Cardiovascular Developments, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada will be held on Feb 28th, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Rectorate of the University of Kragujevac.

Prof. Dhalla is world recognized scientist in the field of cardiovascular research with extraordinary contribution in the development of two most important societies in this field: International Society for Heart Research, and International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences. On his list of publicationas are up to know 776 papers: 606 articles in CC/SCI journals, as well as 170 chapters in books and monographs. (Click here for Dr Dhalla's CV)..

At the end of symposium Prof. Nebojsa Arsenijevic will be awarded for his outstanding contribution and friendly support for Serbian Physiological Society in past decade.
