St. ALYPIUS THE STYLITE
Faculty Patron`s Day

St. Alypius the Stylite was born in Hadrianopolis and from childhood he was dedicated to the service of God. He served as a deacon with Bishop Theodore in the church in Hadranopolis. But, desirous of a life in solitude, prayer and meditation, St. Alypius withdrew to A Greek cemetery outside the city.

This was a cemetery from which people fled in terror because of frequent demonic visions seen there. Alypius set up a cross in the cemetery and built a church in honor of St. Euphemia, who had appeared to him in a dream. Beside the church, he built a tall pillar, climbed on top of it and spent fifty-three years there in prayer and fasting. Neither the mockery of men nor the evil of the demons was able to drive him away or cause him to waver his intention.

The courageous Alypius protected himself from the power of the demons by the sign of the Cross and the name of Jesus. Finally men began to revere him and came to him for consolation, instruction and healing. Two monasteries were built beside his pillar, one on one side for men and one on the other side for women. His mother and sister lived in the women`s monastery.

St. Alypius guided people from his pillar, by his example and words, showing them the way of salvation. He lived for one hundred years and passed away in the year 640, during the reign of the Emperor Heraclius.

His head is preserved in the Monastery of Koutlomousiou, on the Holy Mountain.

The Faculty celebrates the Venerable Alypius the Stylite since 2005.

We were founded on 9th December, 1977.
We celebrated three decades of work on 9th December, 2007.

We are the Faculty with its students at the first place.

Study programmes

In September 2006, the academic integrated studies started at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac.

All courses last for one semester.

The study programme at the academic integrated studies is organized through blocks (semesters), and studying at the major for a doctor of medicine, consists of 12 blocks. 35 courses are obligatory and 15 are elective out of 50 courses.

The teaching process is held by the use of interactive programmes oriented toward the students: we look for and provide conditions for a greater engagement of the students during lectures, with constant checking of their knowledge. In 2005, the major - Pharmacy was established at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac, The programme was made under the influence of the universities in England, especially the Nottingham University.

Having in mind that the programme is new, we have enrolled a relatively small number of students, so that we could succeed in fulfilling the set standards of the quality of programme.

Cooperation which refines Us

We are modern Serbian Faculty which cooperates with the prestigious institutions in the country and abroad.

         We must mention:

MMA - scientific- teaching base

Since May 2005, the Faculty and MMA cooperate in numerous fields: we have joint research projects.

21 doctors from MMA attend doctoral studies at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac, and our doctoral students accomplish the practical trainingat this most prestigious and best equipped national health institution which could not be possible anywhere else.

The University of California
and the Medical Faculty, San Francisco (UCSF) are our friends.

UCSF is one of the most prestigious medical faculties in USA. In 2005 it was the fourth faculty at the rank list determined according to the research projects financed by the National Institute for health of USA (it was the best result of all state medical faculties)

In April 2006, one week seminar was held at our Faculty about the modern types of education in medicine. The professors of UCSF were in charge of it, all of them being members of the Academy of the medical educators.

The whole teaching staff of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac was trained here.

The Committee for the quality of work at our Faculty continuously controls the level of work with students since 27th January, 2007.

This Faculty is proud of its professors

All our professors are good pedagogues and excellent experts. We are especially proud to have the following professors that have joined us recently:

Professor doctor Miodrag Stojkovic, afamous genetician.

In November 2006, he was chosen for a full professor of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac, in a specialized area of genetics. The worlds leading researcher in the area of stemcells, will work in the Laboratory for research of stemcells, which was equipped especially for him by the Faculty.

         Professor doctor Miodrag Lukic,

vice-rector of the University in Dubai, former head of the department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Medical Faculty in Belgrade, a visiting professor at over 10 universities in the world, one of the most famous names in the sphere of the world`s immunology, and a fullprofessor of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac since February 2007.

The names and biographies of all of our professorscan be found at the web site of the Faculty. There you can also seeaboutthe visiting professors of our Faculty, and then read for yourself about their prestigious reputation in the world of science.

We are famous

         For our doctoral academic studies

We are the first Faculty in the country that has established the doctoral academic studies. The studies lastfor three years, and in order to provide the quality of the doctors of sciences that we teach, we set up very strict criteria: in order to acquire the title of PhD at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac, the requirement is, besides passed examinations and oral doctoral examination, also to have at least three papers published in the worlds leading journals.
The policy of the faculty is that the best ten students of every generation should get the scholarship by the Faculty itself in the following year, and ten of the best students in the final year have the possibility to finish their doctoral studies abroad, at one of the institutions that we cooperate with.
We have 9 courses at these studies, and the special Committee carries out constant control of the quality of the teaching process at all courses. Thanks to the broad rangeof the programmes and seriousness of our work, as well as the fact that in the last two years we have been the only Faculty in the country that has organized doctoral studies, we have doctoral students from almost all faculties.
To illustrate this, there are 65 doctors of medicine who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, working at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac.

For the international Serbian Journal of Experimentaland Clinical Research

The Medical Faculty in Kragujevac is the only faculty in the country that has its own international journal. Why is Serbian Journal of Experimentaland Clinical Research significant
Publishing of the results of a research is the final act of the scientific attempts - the job is not completed nor evaluated until the results are published. The phrase Publish or disappear! is well known to all researchers. During the evaluation of the results of the scientific projects, only the results published in the internationally acknowledged journals, such as Serbian Journal of Experimentaland Clinical Research, are accepted. Serbian Journal of Experimentaland Clinical Research was registered in 1999, and the first copy was published in 2000. Since then, it is published twice a year (two regular numbers and two supplements (one is thematic and one dealing with the students papers). It is published in the English language. Since 2002, the electronic edition has also been published at the website: www.medicusonline.com The editorial staff of the magazine is international and it constantly expands.
Serbian Journal of Experimentaland Clinical Research got its international status in the spring of 2005.

For the scientific projects that we finance ourselves

Scientific research is realized through the basic, appliedand developmental researches. As a subsidized institution, it is common that the means are ensured by the republic funds. However, we made a step beyond.
Namely, in order to obtain the means for a project from the state funds (which means to carry out a research), the highly set criteria should be satisfied. They usually include a number of the papers published in the international journals (which is a way to evaluate the seriousness of a candidate). Young people, at the beginning of their careers, no matter how talented they are, usually are not able to be successful candidates for donations. That means that: they do not have conditions for a serious research, they do not succeed in publishing the internationally verified scientific papers, so they cannot be serious candidates even in the following years.
What does this Faculty do We finance the so-called Junior projects, which is the way to help young researchers to make the first move and appear in the scientific circles. In the following year, the criteria for the ones being financed by the Faculty, become set equally high as well as the state ones.
At the moment, the realization of three projects is in progress at the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac, being financed by the Republic of Serbia (with 2.500000 dinars) and 16 projects being financed by the Faculty itself (7.500000 dinars).

For the Section for urgent medicine

The section for urgent medicine was formed in December, 2005, and our students are the only ones in the country that are privileged to obtain the theoretical knowledge and practical training in this area according to the standards valid in the countries of the European Union.
The activities of the section are:
- drills in cardiopulmonaryl reanimation for the students of the Medical Faculty.
-courses of the Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) through continuous medical education
- education in CPR for the doctors on internship

Every student or participant of some of our courses, after successfully finished course, receives ERC certificate (European Resuscitation Council) which is valid in 23 European countries, because it is accepted as a standard in the area of cardiopulmonary reanimation. The certificate is issued by the European Council for resuscitation in cooperation with the National Resuscitation Council.
Up to date, over 600 students and other participantshave been educated in this section.

By using an exceptional technical equipment which provides conditions for the development of telemedicine

We are the only domestic Medical Faculty that has the equipment for telemedicine. The equipment makes possible for us to hold video conferences and our students can watch operations in the operating rooms live, with the help of the wireless internet, which is the authorial project of our web administrators.

Videoconferences are carried out in a way that the lecturers in any country in the world give lectures to our students in the real time. Students can ask questions to the lecturer at any time. The first such session was held on 11th December,2006. The participants were the experts from the Pediatric Clinic in Washington and professors and consultants from the Pediatric Department of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac.

Direct transmission of the operations is just one more privilege availableto our students only. The first transmission of the operation was held on May 10th 2006. The operation of laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed by the team led by a professor doctor Radovan Cvijanovic and the head doctor,Emil Farkas. In the amphitheatre of the Faculty, the operation was watched by students, with the expert comments by professor doctor Ljubisa Acimovic, the head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Surgery and a lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac.

What do our students have ....

        - 5 specially equipped laboratories: for experimental and clinical pharmacology, for immunology, for histochemistry, for physiology, for research of stem cells;
- reading room, which is airconditioned and it is open 0-24. During the examination time, all classrooms are turned into reading rooms and they are open 0-24. Students are protected by the professional security guard during the night hours.

        - every day 09:00-21:00 air conditioned computer classrooms are available with more than 60 computers. They are all connected to the academic web with the real speed of 2Gbps.

- every classroom and amphitheater have video beams

        - There is also cafeteria which is open all day and where students can buy a warm meal or refresh themselves with numerous exclusively non-alcoholic drinks for very low prices.

        also...

We pay much attention to the ambience we study in. We, at the faculty, care very much about the interior and especially about the hygiene of all the premisesIt fascinates every visitor of ours! Our halls are decorated with the art pictures painted by the professor of art, Vidan Papic, who made it exclusively for our Faculty, with the details from the medical atlases.

We keep the spirit of the school alive and we have the whole advertising material decorated with the motives from our logo. (the logo is put on ballpens, notebooks, blocks, cups, caps, t-shirts but also on the medical coats)

The box for the suggestions can be seen in our hall, because we appreciate the opinion of our students (we call it the black box).

Our administration is always at the students service, because it exists for them. At the time when the new generation of students is about to start studying, we will be completely covered with information. The new computer science system will provide total comfort for our students (including the possibility of applying for an exam from home, communication with professors, insight into the marks, approach to the forum, approach to the library in order to find out where is the book that we need, is)

Some more details from the life of Faculty

         - We have Students parliament, existing since November 2006.

         - We have Students association

        - We have sports section (well organized male and female basketball teams, male volleyball team, male and female table tennis players; we have a shooting team, chess players, football players and handball players). All teams have schedules for the training being paid by the Faculty.

        - CNIRS - science-research students center participates in the organization of the students congresses ;

        - YuSIC- yugoslav committee for the international cooperation of the students of medicine (last year 40 students from Kragujevac went to an exchange to Macedonia, Russia, Egypt, Italy, Spain, Mexico etc, and during the summer we hosted the same number of students).

        - PR team - since November 2005, our Faculty has been the first in Serbia to have a PR team consisting of students. The goal is that we are should be the bridge betweenthe citizens and the Faculty, Faculty administration and students, professors and other employees and to articulate what we want to say or show to the public. What helps us in it is PROZOR - the bulletin that we publish; it is free and we give it to the students, and electronic version is going to be available at our site soon.

Maybe it would be nice to remindyou why it is worth studying in Kragujevac

The state institutions of Serbia were established in Kragujevac in the 19th century: National Office (1820), Public Court of Serbia (1826), Serbian Council (1826), State Council (1835), and following them, the cradles of the Serbian education and culture: Grammar School (1833), Lycee - the first school of higher learning (1839), Theater (1835), Serbian Newspapers (1834). The first regular convention was held in Kragujevac in 1824, and after the Berlin Convention in 1878, the independence and territorial expansion of Serbia was declared here.

To cut the story short, it is Kragujevac where the new, modern Serbia was born. This city keeps that spirit of tradition and priceless cultural heritage more than any other place.

The beauty of living and studying in our city

The city is small enough that you do not need public transportation, and big enough that everyone can find the contents he is interested in. The cultural sphere of the city is very rich! The same goes for the night life (if you wonder how much money you would need for the night life - maximum 500 dinars!). Furthermore, a student, freshman, has great chances of getting a place in Students hostel, and if he does not succeed, a room can be rented for less sum than in Belgrade. For example, a really decent room can be rented for 50 euros, the whole flat for 120 euros.

The university dining hall has enough capacity for all students who want to eat this way, and also the important thing is that the prices at supermarkets and in the market -halls are significantly lower than in other places.
